Getting to Funchal
Funchal is served by Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira Airport (FNC) with regular flights from Lisbon, Porto and several European cities; seasonal direct services increase in summer. Cruise ships also call at Funchal’s harbour. Ferries to the mainland are infrequent, so most visitors arrive by air and then use local transport or hire a car.
Getting around Funchal
Central Funchal is relatively walkable but hilly and sometimes cobbled; comfortable shoes are recommended. The city has an efficient bus network, taxis and cable cars to Monte. Renting a car is handy for exploring the island’s viewpoints and north coast, but parking can be tight in peak season.
A two-day itinerary
Day 1: Morning visit to Mercado dos Lavradores and the cathedral, then take the cable car to Monte and wander Monte Palace Tropical Garden; descend via the traditional wicker toboggan ride or taxi and end the day with seafood in Zona Velha.
